A compact yet artfully designed deck that enabled the homeowners to take full advantage of the wooded and river view.  A step down from the doorwall dropped the handrail to minimize the view obstruction.

Extending the Home into a Woodland Paradise

The homeowners had multiple small children, so sturdy balusters were a key design element.  They also wanted to be able to see the woods from inside the house, so the Deckorator aluminum spindles were a perfect solution.  The durability of aluminum and slim profile allow the balusters to nearly disappear against the vertical backdrop of the many small trees.

Pressure-Treated Deck

A broad step down from the doorwall lowers the deck by over 8 inches, lowering the railing to preserve the view from inside the home.  Two custom benches with enclosed storage add both visual appeal and functionality.

Deck Storage Detail

A detailed view of the deck bench / storage unit.  The tops are sturdy enough to jump on (or off), and the inside can serve as storage for hoses, outdoor toys or other items.  In addition, the pressure-treated wood can serve (minus the cover) as a planter for some large plants.

Pressure-Treated Arbor

An arbor adds architectural flair (and plant hanging space) for this pressure-treated deck.  The supports for the arbor are constructed of 4"x4" posts and are actually anchored beneath the deck surface to the framing members, providing a sturdy foundation.  In the two years the homeowners have used the deck, the arbor has been used to hang plants, bird feeders, and even holiday lights!

Deck Skirting and Storage

Pressure-treated, interlocking deck skirting provides enclosed under-deck storage for outdoor equipment.  The doors open up wide enough to fit summer tables, chairs and other patio furniture comfortably within.  Although this deck doesn't have one, combined with an under-deck weather system, the area beneath could almost become dry storage.

Open Stair Risers

Open-riser stairs are rendered more elegant by framing them in as a series of descending steps.  The homeowners decided to have the stairs extend from the side of the deck to minimize impact to the wooded area behind the house.
